We host a multitude of workshops  which are open to club members and the entire school. Our workshops get students interested in the medical field by allowing them to do hands-on activities with their friends in a relatively laid-back setting. Here are a few of them:

Suturing Workshop: Suturing Workshop: One of our most popular workshops is the suturing workshop. Hosted multiple times per year, students learn how to  stitch and close wounds using fake skin and orange peels.

CPR Certification: We host annual CPR and AED training workshops, in which students get Red Cross certified.

Phlebotomy Workshops: Phlebotomy comes from phleb meaning vein and tomia meaning cut. In this workshop, members learn practicing blood drawing and IV set up on a fake arm.

Physicians Clinic: One of our most recent workshops, the Physicians Clinic taught students how to use medical instruments found in a general check up. Guided tutorials were given in how to use a stethoscope, penlight, sphygmomanometer, and knee reflex hammer. This was one of the workshops we also taught to kids in Vuleta Grande for our service trip to Guatemala.

To give aspiring doctors insight on what medical careers are really like, we host a multitude of speakers from various STEM backgrounds. Most recently, Northwestern professor and researcher Kevin Nyberg, came to talk to us about his work on RNA and how it can be used in genome editing technologies to help treat disease. We’ve also had medical students  (Josephine Batista, Gladys Rojas) and doctors (such as Dr. Codispoti - pictured above).

"Pre-Med Advice" Club Meeting

Students are often uninformed about where they should apply to college or what activities they should do if they are interested in becoming a doctor. MediClubs solves this problem by having open conversations between peers about the process. Did you know that Rutgers University offers a 7 year combined MD program, as do many other schools? Did you know that some undergrad colleges deflate grades, which may harm you when applying to medical school? If you were in MediClubs you would!

Teaching school-children about hygiene in Guatemala

Part of the MediClubs mission is impacting the world through service. Our members currently volunteer and do service projects at hospitals around the Chicagoland area. Additionally, MediClubs has worked with the CitiHope on their Hope For Her initiative, making and donating reusable sanitary pads to women in Uganda. During the summer of 2018, MediClubs traveled to Guatemala in order to help construct a local school and educate children and locals on the healthy hygiene and how to become a doctor via workshops and demonstrations. We also built and maintain the website and social media for Erase Inflammatory Breast Cancer, a cause that is close to the hearts of Mediclubs' founders.

Volunteering at Swedish Covenant Hospital

MediClubs provides connections to various volunteer opportunities. A number of our members hold positions in Swedish Covenant Hospital, located on the north side of Chicago. The hospital offers enriching experiences in general patient care; volunteers choose between various departments, such as emergency, post-surgical units, and pediatrics.

The Shirley Ryan Abilitylab, located in Downtown Chicago, is another significant volunteer location. Our MediClubs members provide administrative support, work to enhance patient experience, and aid in therapy sessions. Volunteers begin with a 50 hour commitment, after which they may choose a department of interest, working alongside doctors to ensure the highest quality of patient care.
